Seventhfury Studio

I’ve recently reconnected with an old colleague of mine from space150 – Matthew Johnson. A brilliantly talented illustrator and web designer, he’s running his own multifaceted company named Seventhfury Studios. And doing very well!

And now for that shameless plug, please drop in to his site, it’s really slick!

GRIDJuly 28th, 2008

It’s been awhile since a game has kept me in my seat for nearly a whole day with the necessary breaks for food and restroom. Race Driver: GRID, has done just that over this past weekend. I’m sort of a gear-head in real life so naturally I love racing games. Likewise, I have very high standards for those games.

The Project Gotham series has always been the bar for me. It’s my staple of racing since I find the Gran Turismo games to be too technical and boring. Dear Codemasters, “You’ve done it.” This game is awesome! I find that GRID is a sensual blend of qualities from PGR, Sega Rally 2, Initial D (arcade), and the Burnout series. But don’t take that too literally, it’s a rich and delectable title that has to be sampled to fully appreciate.

The GRID world is based on seasons that always end with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. There are three territories with many different styles driving and you progress through the game by earning reputation points each time you race. I was pleasantly surprised that with enough points you are able to start your own racing team and hire a secondary driver to compete alongside you.

The most unique feature I’ve found is the ability to “Flashback” during a race. If you make that fatal mistake and wreck the car, you can go into the replay mode and rewind the race and flashback to a moment in time before you took that stroll from the track. Take a moment to watch the replay a few times to watch that spectacular crash system.

Another facet to the game is the many different types of driving available. From demolition derby in America, to Le Mans prototype cars in Europe, and drift car events in Japan. It really is a much bigger game that I thought I was getting into. If you like racing games in any way, you’ll want to check this game out. I’m enjoying the 360 version myself, but it’s out for just about every platform.

If you haven’t seen this yet, you must watch it. I have friends in IT and I happen to have a lot of personal experience with IT. This hits on so many levels, it’s probably the best mash up of IT problems ever. Well, minus Halo…

Star Trek: The Experience. Its dead Jim…July 21st, 2008

As any self respecting geek, I’ve heard about the impending closure of “Star Trek: The Experience” in Las Vegas. Now that I have a shiny new blog I feel compelled to register my disgust with this horrible news. It’s planning to sadden us all in September as it closes it’s doors at 11 long years at the Los Vegas Hilton. I suppose 11 years is nearly an eternity for something to stay in or around the strip. It has a museum after all. Anything somewhat educational or intellectual these days seems to get replaced with thirty-two Starbucks stores or this. It seems like rather poor timing as well since the new Star Trek film being directed by J.J. Abrams is coming this next year. I’d be willing to bet the attraction would see a renewed flow of patrons after the release.

There seems to be a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, if not a bright one. A spokesperson from CBS has said they are considering other options for the attraction. I certainly hope they can work something out because it is one of my favorite places in the world. An expansion and refreshing with the new movie in mind and perhaps, (dare I say it) a new series (not Enterprise) would tickle my happy places in anticipation for a subsequent visit. But not to be greedy, even just moving it to a new location would require an immediate visit. I do plan to see it one final time for the second time in August, during the “Official Star Trek Con” that will be held right there in the Las Vegas Hilton. I’m particularly looking forward to having lunch at Quark’s on the Deep Space Nine promenade, every day.

They can’t close it yet. Wesley hasn’t infected, damaged, lost, or blown it up yet! (Sorry Wil)
See what Wil Wheaton has to say as well.

Project Gotham RacingJuly 3rd, 2008

I’m a huge fan of the Project Gotham Racing series of games. I got hooked on MSR (Metropolis Street Racer) on the Dreamcast back in the day, which was by the same company. I change my wallpaper fairly often at work, and I wanted a nice Project Gotham Racing 4 one. However, if you do a bit of searching you’ll find there is little out there. I decided to make my own so I faithfully reproduced the logo from existing artwork on the website, and placed it on a nice simple background. I’m making it available because I really like this one!

The site is finally live and busting with new creative. There’s definitely more coming, and now I’ve even stepped out of the 90s into a blog!
