It’s been awhile since a game has kept me in my seat for nearly a whole day with the necessary breaks for food and restroom. Race Driver: GRID, has done just that over this past weekend. I’m sort of a gear-head in real life so naturally I love racing games. Likewise, I have very high standards for those games.
The Project Gotham series has always been the bar for me. It’s my staple of racing since I find the Gran Turismo games to be too technical and boring. Dear Codemasters, “You’ve done it.” This game is awesome! I find that GRID is a sensual blend of qualities from PGR, Sega Rally 2, Initial D (arcade), and the Burnout series. But don’t take that too literally, it’s a rich and delectable title that has to be sampled to fully appreciate.
The GRID world is based on seasons that always end with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. There are three territories with many different styles driving and you progress through the game by earning reputation points each time you race. I was pleasantly surprised that with enough points you are able to start your own racing team and hire a secondary driver to compete alongside you.
The most unique feature I’ve found is the ability to “Flashback” during a race. If you make that fatal mistake and wreck the car, you can go into the replay mode and rewind the race and flashback to a moment in time before you took that stroll from the track. Take a moment to watch the replay a few times to watch that spectacular crash system.
Another facet to the game is the many different types of driving available. From demolition derby in America, to Le Mans prototype cars in Europe, and drift car events in Japan. It really is a much bigger game that I thought I was getting into. If you like racing games in any way, you’ll want to check this game out. I’m enjoying the 360 version myself, but it’s out for just about every platform.
